Kirkdale Estate Holiday Cottages
This beautiful part of South West Scotland has a mild climate with heather-covered hills, old woodlands with streams and rivers and green grasslands. There are plenty of places to walk and explore as well as a lot of attractions, from ancient monuments, standing stones and castles to a famous ice-cream maker and Chocolate Factory - plenty to keep children amused.
Deer are often seen undisturbed in the woods, and there are red squirrels and otters, and the beach is shingly, wild and unspoilt. Just inland the Galloway Forest Park has such rich starry dark skies that it is now Britain's only internationally recognised Dark Sky Reserve.
Each cottage has maps of the area along with leaflets about the many things to enjoy in Dumfries and Galloway, Kirkcudbrightshire, and the Solway Coast. Owner Kirsten Hannay, who lives nearby, has thought through all the practical details so you will feel very warmly welcomed.

Further along a private track and about 200 metres from Kirkdale Bank, Kirkdale Port is a charming cottage surrounded by enclosed garden and woodland on three sides. The fourth side, in front, has a lawn with access directly to the shingly beach (the photograph at the top of the page is of the old landing 'port' on the beach).
Otters are sometimes seen. Deer and red squirrels stray across the lawn and birds also come close to this quiet cottage.
Harmoniously decorated with simple fabrics and subtle colours, cosy and comfortable, the cottage has sea views from all three bedrooms and the sitting room.
The cottage is just right for a family but also just perfect if you are looking for a romantic and contemplative atmosphere to write or to read. It is a rare find indeed and many guests just fall in love with it and return here time and time again.
