The Scottish Borders
Southern Scotland
A charming Scottish Borders country house near Kelso and Jedburgh and Northumberland National Park.
Sleeping 8 - 10.
Golf: Local championship golf courses. The Roxburghe and The Hirsel both within easy reach of Glebe House; as well as all numerous smaller courses to be found by every Scottish Borders town and village. The Freedom of the Fairways Scheme offered by the Scottish Tourist board can include all of these.
Fishing: For game fishing and coarse fishing there are numerous excellent trout lochs and the famous trout and salmon rivers - the Teviot and the Tweed. A local guide can arrange this and tackle hire is available. There is a chest freezer at the house for your trophies!
Shooting: Shooting is available locally if booked in advance. Safe storage in house. Outside caterers can be arranged.
Other activities: mountain biking, horse riding, shopping at local woollen mills and factory cashmere outlets. Art class perhaps? also local. There are literally hundreds of things to do within easy striking distance of Glebe House - Sarah has compiled a detailed list of ideas and information.
Glebe House lies on the edge of Hownam (pronounced "Hoonam") which is a very small village in the midst of some of the most wild and spectacular country in Southern Scotland.
Glebe House was the old manse for Hownam Kirk which is behind the house. Parts are Georgian, with Victorian additions such as the three bay window Dining Room and bedroom above which you can see in the photograph. The large garden has lawns, roses, shrubs and mature trees, and on one side is a tributary of the Tweed, the Kale Water. There's also a Summer House and Bar-B-Que.
The roads are quiet and it is an easy drive to local pubs and restaurants, shops and tourist venues. The local butcher and fishmonger both deliver to Hownam or you may visit the shops personally and select the most delicious fresh produce.
Owner Sarah Fraser-Ballantyne offers Glebe House for self catering rental accommodation for up to 10, (or 11 with the Z bed) and it is available year round, and equally good to stay at in summer or winter. A wonderful house for special occasions, groups of friends, families, weddings and more.
Glebe House is in the midst of walking country: the Pennine Way passes a few miles away, St Cuthbert's Way, Southern Upland Way, the Abbeys Way and the Roman Dere Street, and all around are remote valleys and heather and grass covered hills of the Scottish Borders - a paradise for walkers and nature lovers.
Many guests find that simply staying at Glebe House and reading the books in the extensive library by the fireside, is also a good option!
