Southdean House
near Jedburgh
Scottish Borders
Scotland
Sleeping up to 11 or 12

Southdean House is a comfortable beautifully restored Georgian country house set in a garden of lawns and flower beds and bounded on one side by the River Jed. The landscape is inspiring: the surrounding hills and valleys seem to have an ancient atmosphere (Celtic hill forts and Romans camps), the air is pure and on clear nights the dome of the sky is full of stars.
It is quiet and peaceful too, set back from the road along a long drive, and yet easily accessible for the castles, medieval abbeys and small country towns (such as Jedburgh, Melrose, Kelso and Peebles) for which the Scottish Borders are so famous. Southdean House is about 8 miles south of Jedburgh and about 3 miles from the Scottish-English border at Carter Bar.
Nearby are some excellent (even world-famous) off-road cycle tracks , forest walks and hill walking and you can fish for trout on the river by the house. There's also a patio garden with furniture, barbecue and small pond.
As well as a drawing room for grown-ups Southdean House has a large playroom for children - and a fenced garden. With six bedrooms and available for self-catering rental accommodating up to twelve, it is ideal for a family holiday or for a group of friends.

Right;
The Jed Water at the bottom of the garden. The poet James Thomson (1700-1748), inspiration for JMW Turner, lived at Sou'den Manse very close by, and wrote in Autumn (1746):
...and of watery wealth
Full; winding deep and green, her fertile vales,
With many a cool translucent brimming flood
Washed lovely, from the Tweed (pure parent-stream,
Whose pastoral banks first heard my Doric reed,
With, silvan Jed, thy tributary brook)

Right;
The view across the lawn from the front of the house. The Jed Water runs behind the trees in the middle distance.
Note: Although the river on the edge of the of garden is fenced off, and there is a small pond in another enclosed garden, care should be taken with children.
