The Harbour Cottages

Right down almost at the tip of the Rhins of Galloway, that distinctive peninsula which extends from the unspoilt south west corner of Scotland into the Irish Sea, is the tiny harbour of Drummore (shop, bistro), once a bustling fishing village, but now remarkably peaceful and sleepy.

The semi-detached Harbour Cottages there, named for the Hebridean islands of Eigg and Rhum (tempting to call them the Egg-nog Cottages, but let's not get carried away) are of comparatively recent build, but were so designed as to look just like the fishermen's cottages of former times. They have a glorious situation right on the shore, with heavenly views out across the water to the Galloway coast. There is ample parking at the back, where there is an extensive south-facing grass garden and each has its own patio area (furniture, BBQ) for al fresco dining.

Inside, the benefits of a more modern construction become apparent, for they combine a high degree of comfort with every convenience. Multi-fuel stoves in feature illuminated alcoves in the sitting rooms provide a cosy heart to the living area; the dining kitchens are well-equipped with all appliances, and in addition there are two bedrooms and bathroom.

This is a great area for walking and relaxing on the sandy beaches on the west side of the peninsula. It's a paradise too for ornithologists, especially around the lighthouse at the end of the peninsula which forms the very tip of mainland Scotland. Garden lovers will find they have a choice of several famous gardens to visit in the area, Port Logan Botanic Gardens and the NT gardens at Threave to name but two.

The charming village of Portpatrick, clustered round its harbour and the starting point of the Southern Upland Way, is also well worth a visit.

The nearest large town is Stranraer, and from Cairnryan just up the coast you can take the ferry to Ireland, if you feel like a spot of foreign travel.

Bed linen, towels and electricity are included!included. Up to two pets are welcome at each cottage by arrangement. Smoking is not permitted in the cottages. Wi-Fi is available, subject to provider.
