Kirkton House,
Cardross,
near Glasgow,
Scotland
Kirkton House is a converted 18/19th Century farmstead built around an attractive courtyard and commanding a wide panoramic view of the River Clyde from an elevated position in two acres of grounds. It is situated above the north Clyde village of Cardross in west central Scotland. Only 18 miles west of Glasgow and 15 miles from Glasgow Airport, the location offers an easily accessible 'country' base for the Airport, Loch Lomond, the Trossachs, Glasgow's Burrell Collection, and the main route to the west highlands and islands.
The locality has myriad scenic, historical and architectural points of interest. The 12th Century "Kirkton Chapel" is at the end of the drive. Charles Rennie Macintosh's Art Nouveau masterpiece "Hill House" is just four miles away. There are pleasant walks in the immediate countryside- one at the top of the local valley commands a spectacular view of Loch Lomond. The local golf courses are excellent and the location is ideal for those visiting Glasgow (about 35 mins by car or by half hourly train service).
Stewart and Gillian Macdonald settled in Cardross after many years in Hong Kong, Pakistan, Turkey, Holland and Belgium, and then travelling the world, working for the same Scottish multi-national company. From 1984, they gradually developed Kirkton House into a small hotel with the high, yet unpretentious, standards for which it is renowned to day. Guests from all over the world claim that this small farmstead Guest House has a unique ambience. Please note that from the beginning of 2005 the Macdonalds no longer provide evening meals, but there are pubs in the local village and restaurants in Helensburgh (4 miles).
