Central Scotland, convenient for visiting Stirling (20 mins), Glasgow (30 mins), Edinburgh (60 mins) and Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park (5 miles).

Ballochneck is that happy combination: a grand Scottish country house and estate with wonderfully welcoming and hospitable owners. Fiona and Donnie Allan have set aside some of their best bedrooms (with incredible views over Ballochneck estate to distant hills) to welcome bed and breakfast guests. If you like, Fiona will provide dinner as well - true Scottish country house cooking, fresh, local and organic.

The approach to Ballochneck is along a mile drive, past natural woodland, gently sloping fields, (where you might see the Allan's championship pedigree Suffolk sheep), past the Curling Pond, two acres of trout water where wild duck fly in at dusk, rising up the hill between mature Limes and Wellingtonia to the house itself.

The original Georgian house was added to by the Lord Provost of Glasgow, Sir William McOnie, in 1883, and raised up on a grassy bank to take advantage of exceptional views. Wide stone steps lead up to the front door and entrance hall (right).

At Ballochneck you're welcome to relax in front of a log fire in the Drawing Room, have a morning coffee in the Conservatory, play snooker at the original Edwardian billiard table in the Games Room, walk anywhere on the estate, or picnic by the loch. This is an uplifting place to stay, where you feel on top of the world and well looked after.

Right; Who is the winged figure carved in marble in the Drawing Room chimney-piece? Is it Iris, winged messenger of the gods, who felt drowsy after her visit to Hypnos, god of sleep?
"Iris departed, for she could no more endure the power of sleep, as drowsiness stole seeping through her frame, and fled away back o'er the arching rainbow as she came." -Ovid, Metamorphoses.
