Every room with a view!
A calm spring morning on the banks of the river Fillan about 50 yards below the house. Ben More (3843ft) on the horizon.
The road to the north from Glasgow keeps to the shore along Loch Lomond and at Glen Falloch and Crianlarich begins to open up to the wide expanses and wild hills of the west coast Highlands. About a mile outside of Crianlarich, and set back from the road about 150 yards along a tree-lined avenue is Riverside guesthouse (Tigh-Na-Struith - "house beside running water" - in Gaelic). Owners Janice and Sandy Chisholm have warmly welcomed guests for bed and breakfast here for over 20 years, and it is a beautifully positioned house, surrounded by acres of gardens and trees and with wonderful natural views from every window. Like most bed and breakfasts they don't provide lunch or dinner, but there are local restaurants and pubs where you can find a good meal.
Although only an hour from Glasgow airport here you are in the middle of some of Scotland's most romantic Highland scenery (and Munros - mountains over 3000 feet). Around about (see map at the bottom of this page) is the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park, Stirling Castle, Loch Fyne and Inveraray castle, Oban and the sea coast with early remains of the first Scottish Kingdom of Dalraida, and Glencoe to the north. Riverside Guesthouse is a great base from which to explore them all.

Nearby Waterfall:

Right; These waterfalls are about 3 miles south of Riverside Guesthouse. When there has been rain the steep sided gorge can quickly fill with an awesome torrent of water, as was described by Dorothy Wordsworth who in the company of her brother William and Samuel Taylor Coleridge visited the falls on Monday 12th September 1803:
"Afterwards, the ascent was very laborious, being frequently almost perpendicular. |
