Newtonmill House is Rose and Stephen Rickman's family home where they warmly welcome guests to stay for bed and breakfast.

Surrounded by mature trees, gardens and rolling farmland a few minutes' drive from the main A90 road between Perth, Dundee and Aberdeen, it is an ideal and central place to stay for visiting Central and Eastern Scotland, convenient for some of the best golf courses, as well as country houses, castles, gardens, picturesque fishing villages and the romantic hidden glens of Angus.

But it's not only practical to stay here but aesthetically rewarding too! The handsomely proportioned house was built in 1760 and seems to exist in a perfectly balanced relationship with its extensive garden laid out in front. Divided by paths and hedges, with a central axis flanked by old-fashioned herbacious borders (photograph, top) its formal garden quadrants contain an abundance of roses, peonies, fruit and fruit trees, all kinds of vegetables - and 27 varieties of potato.

The traditional walled garden, Rose's passion, is occasionally open for charity. The Queen Mother was a regular visitor, Glamis Castle is only 20 minutes away and some of the plants originally came as gifts from her, from her garden at the Castle of Mey. When you stroll past the rows of healthy delicious-looking fruit and vegetables you can see why Rose, who is a Cordon Blue trained cook, is so keen on good food and offers her guests optional dinner or supper with fresh ingredients straight from the garden.

Rose makes a delicious breakfast of stewed fruit from the garden, organic eggs from Rose's hens, traditional over-night porridge with cream and brown sugar (on request), Greek yoghurt, cereals, toast from home made bread, home-made marmalade, local Glen Lethnot heather honey in the comb, tea and coffee.

Also Rose's specialities such as Eggs Benedict and Eggs Florentine, and smoked haddock, kippers and the local delicacy, Arbroath smokies. If you would like to try any of these please ask her in advance - she doesn't keep these in the freezer: such things are always fresh!
